This conversation about churches authorizing charter schools has raised my hackles. Not because it deals with religious organizations overseeing public schools and ensuring that public dollars are spent well (a conversation absolutely worth having), but because the conversation is happening in Ohio, where we already have too many charter school authorizers (70+ sponsors serving about 310 schools) - especially if the goal of authorizing is to birth and oversee great schools. Thinking of voting for Democrat Kristin Szakos (aka the Moat Monster ), in Charlottesville’s November 3, 2009 City Council election? Well, think again, that is, if temperance and civility in governance matter to you. Like her red-headed comrade , Dave Norris , Szakos has a thin veneer of blithness and a mean-streak that runs a mile deep. And, like Mayor Norris, she is “ reckless ” with her online correspondence, especially when she believes her audience to be limited.

Fordham Law’s Center on Law and Information Privacy released a study that found state educational databases across the country ignore key privacy protections for the nation’s K – 12 children. The findings come as Congress is considering legislation that would expand and integrate the 43 existing state databases without taking into account the critical privacy failures in the states’ electronic warehouses of children’s information.

A new study suggests that quality pre-kindergarten not only prepares kids for school, but also reduces the percentage of students in special education, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Adding to the growing reasons why early learning matters, the study focused on students enrolled in Pennsylvania’s Pre-K Counts and found its classrooms helped to close the achievement gap.

The other day as I entered hour number TWO at my pediatrician’s office (not the normal wait time there, but apparently the staff was dealing with a very sick newborn ) I became painfully aware that not everyone knows the ins-and-outs of packing a suitable bag for an outing with their child. Part of my time in the waiting room was spent near a nice father whose eleven month old daughter was playing with my children as we waited. The father has entered the office merrily carrying his wallet and car keys.

I’ve mentioned before how much I adore toys that actually make Anna think instead of just an electronic toy that tells her what to think.   Since money is tight these days, people have been forced to be more creative with their entertainment and a happy byproduct of these difficult times is that there seems to be a shift in making toys more basic too.  Electronics have their place – my kid has her own iphone , for crying out loud -  but nothing makes me happier than seeing Anna pretending and using her imagination.

The USA is being overrun by rodents, but at least they are little cute furry ones. The Zhu Zhu pet hamsters are the newest fad in kid’s toys and, based upon early indications, will be at the top of every child’s wish list this Christmas. They could even be the toy of the year for 2009. In the words of the company’s marketing slogan, Zhu Zhu pets are “pets without the mess”. They don’t need feeding, they don’t need their cage cleaned out and they don’t die leaving you to explain to little Johnny that his hamster has gone to heaven.

It’s the same story every year around the holidays. You make a list of the items you’d like to give to each person on your list. Unfortunately those items don’t all cost the same amount, and in an effort to be “fair” you end up spending more than you planned. This year, consider giving gift cards; it’s a great way to stick to your budget for gift giving. If your family is like most, every member of the family has their own interests. Purchasing a gift card for each person can save you a lot of time, traveling, and headache finding just the perfect gift.

Definitions of some English words can change quite rapidly these days. In the recent past the meaning of words was often very fixed. Today the meaning can change in the blink of an eye. With faster and newer ways to exchange ideas such as Twitter and with wider and more culturally, socially and educationally dissimilar groups connecting together – words are put back on the anvil of evolution and changed into something new and more reflective of current life.

Last week I wrote a post on being a taker, not just a giver . Continuing the theme of addressing the flipside of well-trod Christian themes, I want to write about when God chooses to bless you, rather than send hardship your way. Christians have generally been exposed to lots of teaching on how to deal with suffering and tragedy (I loved reading  How Long O Lord by Don Carson).

The room for the baby has to be safe and comfortable immaterial of the fact of the theme and furnishing you provide in it. Baby bedding must be cleaned before your baby’s crib is first made up, and it is important that you choose a style that fits your infant’s age. For your young infant’s safety and comfort, he or she should sleep on a flat sheet and under only one light blanket, with fluffy quilts and comforters added when the baby is a little older.

Apparently, some experts claim that having your kid in the womb listen to music (especially classical music) is great for their mental development, giving them a head start before they pop out of the womb. Doesn’t explain how we get child prodigies like Mozart in the past when there was no such thing though, leading me to believe that this is more or less hogwash and is some sort of marketing tool instead.

Whatever literary theme you choose, be sure to make the room safe and comfortable for the baby as you plan the nursery and its furnishing. Baby bedding needs to be washed before use, and make sure you select the right one for your child’s age. For your baby while very young a flat sheet and one light blanket are in order; save the comforters and quilts until they’re older. It is better to use the type of bedding that a pediatrician recommends keeping away any such beautiful blankets that moms receive as gift.
