By Chris Andrews HOLT: It was late June, and many Michigan children were heading up north, zoning out on video games or simply hanging out with friends at the start of summer vacation. Not so for the 350 students at Holt’s Horizon Elementary School. They were still in school – and due to return after a six-week vacation in early August – nearly a month before most of their peers. And that is just the way parents like Kim Berry-Smokoski want it.

Its rather ironic these days. You have all these blogs all over the World that are spreading their viewpoints everywhere and I’m all for that, but when a person disagrees with them, that view point never makes it into their news, which makes me wonder, are they really wanting to make the World a better place, or just wanting to mold the World into their perfect viewpoint?

Shael Polakow-Suransky, the city’s new accountability chief. Accountability czar James Liebman is officially leaving the Department of Education, but he isn’t going far. From his office at Columbia University, he will help the city win federal stimulus money to boost the very programs he pioneered during his three-year tenure. In an interview today, Liebman said he’ll go back to teaching criminal law this fall. But he’ll also help the department put together “the most powerful proposal” for federal Race to the Top funds, he said.

Chancellor Joel Klein is making good on his word that, regardless of mayoral control’s expiration, he would continue to appoint superintendents. The Department of Education has named three new interim acting superintendents to fill vacancies, according to the city’s chief schools officer, Eric Nadelstern. Why “interim acting”? “Right now everything’s up in the air,” Nadelstern said. “Until the governance matters are resolved,” he said, the DOE is erring on the side of caution.

The US President Barack Obama announced that he plans to nominate Alexa E. Posny for the position of Assistant Secretary for Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) in the Department of Education.
