In some cultures, children are asked to consider a profound question at a very early age: Why are you here? The question is meant to get the child thinking about their purpose in life. I think this is a great idea and I really wish I had thought to do that when my kids were younger. As we mature, we all develop filters that obstruct our thinking and our imagination. These filters do not inhibit the minds of young children.

On a recent trip to the Bay area, admist a mad morning rush to the airport, I mistakenly left one of my prized possessions at the home of my friend. It’s just a scarf, I realize, but it was a gift which makes it much more special and and all the more missed when it is left behind. I rarely perform these random acts of irresponsibility, but this particular morning was exceptionally hazy.

I’m a great believer in the importance of learning to read. I was fortunate in that my Mom taught me how to read at a very early age. She was a teacher who knew it’s better to teach children to read as young as possible, rather then to let it wait until the child goes to school. She made reading fun, which made me enjoy it. As a teenager when I was supposed to be collecting money from customers on my newspaper route I could be found in quiet areas of the street, sitting on my bike and reading a book.

by Aaron Hu Winter is a very special time to hold your wedding. The season is one that holds special religious significance for many faiths and the theme of giving and compassion and runs strong throughout the holiday season. This is also a season while cold in climate invokes imagery of inner warmth and the romantic intimacy of staying in doors. These themes are perfect for a winter wedding and only increase the importance of the commitment you and your groom is making.

BY DANIEL VICTOR Of The Patriot-News Of the ways Deborah Griffin’s life wouldn’t have been the same without her eight years at the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children, chief among them is that she would have never known what a fishing rodeo was. You don’t see ponds in inner-city Philadelphia, where in her early years she struggled through public school and a dangerous neighborhood. Nor do you see ducks or rows of blooming flowers or the grassy hills of central Pennsylvania or an abundance of teachers who make students believe they care deeply about them.

Preached at Gower Street Chapel, London, on June 24, 1866, by J. C. Philpot“And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power– that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:3-5)What a contrast there is between the experience and language of the apostle Paul, and the experience and language of thousands who profess to be servants of God and preachers of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In my last post I said we need to talk about adoption, about adoption reform, about our experiences. That got me thinking about how hard it really is. And as always, the below does not apply to everyone, just everyone I seem to meet. Think about the last time you met another adoptee. Did they tell you that they were adopted, or did someone else bring it up? There’s a reason that adoptees just don’t want to talk about it.

Published in Dublin’s Evening Herald , 17th July 2009 ‘Daddy, I’m bored.” Words which strike fear and temper into the hearts of even the most patient parent, especially during the seemingly endless summer holidays. Like many five-year-olds, my daughter Madeleine has a low boredom threshold, often requiring full parental interactivity to alleviate her perceived brain-rot. As a parent, it’s too easy to be lazy about it.

Clothes are always great as personalized baby shower gifts. Onesies are always just the perfect gift to give. A matching hat and booties for the baby’s tiny feet will tie things off to create a cute set. With the baby’s name included on the onesie or hat, the child would be ready for the world. If you don’t want to go with the typical clothes, bibs and hand mitts for the cold are also a nice idea. Just remember that keeping things simple can be the best thing to do sometimes, especially when a new addition has come into the world.
