The retired Army officer had taken 14-year-old Matthew out of public school that summer. After five years in a program for mentally disabled students, he could say only a dozen words and could not count past six.

Last week we posted about using an IEP Parent Attachment to add input to your child’s IEP. We heard immediately from Daunna who wrote: The question was “How can I deal with [the school's refusal to include a parent attachment]?” Judy Bonnell’s parent attachment form is a great idea, but it’s not really an attachment unless the school [...]’

I had the intentions of writing a nice, spiritual post about my MOPS networking night last week. But I also promised myself, that when I started this blog, I would be sharing what was going on in my life and what was on my mind. No matter how real it was, how emotional, or how raw it got. Today is going to be one of those posts. Right now, it is 5:52am and I have only had (maybe) about 4 hours of sleep. Sleep is not something my mind and emotions will allow me to do right now.

I was chatting with a young lawyer last week about starting a blog focused on special education law. A blog to help parents who felt they did not have a voice in getting their children with special needs the programs and resources they needed from their school district. And better yet, his passion for the blog was driven by his own personal experiences as a student with special needs. Wow. What an idea. What a resource for parents.

Less than two weeks before the start of school, about 1,800 teaching jobs in New York City remain open as principals appear to be resisting orders to fill vacancies with teachers whose previous positions were eliminated. The people who propose middle school students take algebra classes should be taken out and shot . One of the biggest outrages I saw as a teacher was middle school students were being taught pre-algebra and algebra in middle school. Most students couldn’t grasp it, and of course a lot of them were already special education students, students who were put in sped because of shitty curriculum taught in elementary schools. It’s totally inappropriate to teach algebra to students who for the most part don’t have the abstract capability to learn it.
