As many of you know, total douchebag loser asshole PA State Senate majority leader Dominic Pileggi is holding Philadelphia’s budget hostage in an attempt to play political brinksmanship with the Governor. We want to temporarily raise our sales tax by a penny -literally, a stinkin’ penny - while the Republicans in Harrisburg insist on a state budget with no tax increases , instead opting to cut: Early Childhood Education Pre-K Counts Head Start Supplemental Assistance

By Louise G The best part of working in the public sector are the benefits. The bigger the city the better the health benefits. The pay is also reasonably high as are the retirement benefits. Even though the stimulus package will increase the public sector somewhat, it will not increase as before, as seen by recent employment growth by sector Copyright (c) 2009 Ianson Internet Marketing The best part of working in the public sector are the benefits. A lot of students worldwide cannot fully benefit from a conventional educational program. One of the common reasons behind this is the disability that hinders them from participating in a normal classroom environment. The disabilities of these children range from language and speech impairments to apparent mental retardation. Some others may show no obvious disability but may have academic, social, emotional, or behavioral problems.

Here’s a deal to make your donation dollars go farther. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation will match your donation on DonorChoose.org, in effect doubling your dollars. The caveat is that the projects must help educate kids in rural or high-poverty areas. Projects include buying basic art supplies for a social studies lesson and chipping in toward five digital cameras for a special education class. Browse all the eligible projects here . Thanks, Hubby!

I’ve been too busy with professional development (among other things) to blog about professional development much these last couple of weeks. So let’s summarize briefly… I attended the Special Education Teacher Leadership Academy (SETLA) in Charleston, WV from July 26 to the 30th. I got a new laptop out of the experience. I sat through a brief intro to Vista and learned (among other things) that it has its own screen capture tool (the Snipping Tool) built in. I attended a workshop on INTEL’s online classroom tools.

Little is known about the long-term economic consequences of child and adolescent mental-health problems. There has been some research into the long-term costs of conduct disorder but few long-term studies into the costs of other conditions. Researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry in London and the University of Manchester studied 178 young adults. 129 had deliberately poisoned themselves in adolescence and the other 49 formed a control group for comparison purposes.

Recently I wrote a short piece for the Columbia Missourian on Eric and Linda Petrie, two pastors at God’s Creation Worship Center, a church that has been in Columbia for seven months – and a mere two months in its present location on Garth and Business Loop. I visited the church 3x, two for reporting purposes and a third just to enjoy the Sunday service. The family, pastor Petrie in particular, was extremely welcoming and gave off the impression that he really – I mean, really – is passionate about his faith.

Individual education plans, otherwise known as IEPs, are a wonderful early education resource for children that are struggling or delayed in their classroom development. Having children that are a little bit slow in certain areas of school can be highly stressful in the absence of IEPs. Individual education plans are simply a game plan for your child’s integration and success in the classroom. While IEPs are a wonderful thing, it is the therapists, teachers, and support personnel that make them go.

KATIE HAS A CRUSH ON TYLER. THE KIND OF CRUSH DREAMS ARE MADE OF WHERE HER HEART STOPS WHEN HE ENTERS THE ROOM; WHERE HER MOUTH OPENS TO SAY HELLO AND NOTHING COMES OUT. SHE LONGS TO LOOK AT HIM WITH A SOPHISTICATED COME HITHER SMILE, BUT ALL SHE CAN FORM IS A COCKEYED GOOFY GRIN. KATIE AND TYLER ARE STUDENTS IN MY SISTER’S 7TH GRADE E.M.H CLASS. THEY ARE THE EDUCALLY AND MENTALLY HANDICAPPED STUDENTS WHOSE EYE CONTACT IS SO OFTEN AVOIDED. THE LOWEST LEVEL ACHIEVERS WITH A FARAWAY LOOK THAT

The thing that strikes me about David Shearer is his decency. His humility almost bowls you over when you speak to him. Unlike some of his parliamentary colleagues, he does not appear pompous, arrogant or self serving in any way, shape or form. He encapsulates the attitude of someone who wouldn’t have committed a moments thought to how much the job paid, how much free air travel he’s entitled to, or what size his office would be. The absolute commitment he has shown to helping others has been obvious throughout his entire impressive career.

Today’s piece is third in a four-part report by the George Lucas Educational Foundation (yes, that George Lucas) that outlines steps to improving public education in the U.S. The report contends that states should avoid ratcheting down education standards to meet the level of their students - instead, they should move their students’ skill level up by any means necessary.
