Meet Valerie Roesler. She is 27 and spent a long time at college to become a teacher. And then a bit more time to be certified as a special education teacher. But she threw all of that time and money away when she took a 15 year old kid out for a drunken joy ride at 2 AM Sunday morning. From Fox here with thanks to Cathy: A 27-year-old Fairfax County school teacher is facing charges after she was caught in a car with a 15-year-old boy early Sunday morning.

Life in the Paranormal Fast Lane Thursday, September 17, 2009 Vampires, Witches, & Werewolves. OH MY! Part II The quest for the ever mythical vampire. We have been having a love/hate relationship with this dark, mysterious, beautiful and fatal portrayal of the most powerful predator to stalk human kind for many years. Are they real or fictitious? Like a great part of society today, unless you’ve been living under a rock or in North Korea you are quite familiar with the Vampire sagas of Stephanie Meyer, “Twilight”, and before her was Anne Rice and the “Vampire Chronicles” including “Interview With a Vampire”.

When a child is handed a diagnosis of autism, the most common educational “prescriptions” are the three-fold approach of special education, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Each addresses a host of challenges an individual with autism faces; each encompasses a wide variety of approaches and philosophies. And yet, nothing stumps more people than problems with communication. The ability to make purposeful sounds, to talk, and to communicate often seems like an elusive dream, especially for the more affected individuals in the spectrum.

Hoxby’s study examined 43 charter schools throughout the city. The schools she researched are noted on this map with red stars. New York City charter school students are performing so well on state tests that they may soon catch up to students in Scarsdale, the upscale suburb north of the city, according to an extensive update of a multi-year charter study released today. The optimistic projection stems from researchers’ finding that the boost charter schools give does not taper off, but is steady throughout elementary school and middle school and even into high school.

Tomorrow night (Tues. Sept. 22) is the second regularly scheduled public meeting of the full Board for the month, so I spent much of the afternoon combing through the agenda . The Superintendent and staff like Board members to try and get specific questions in ahead of the actual meeting, so that they have time to answer them and resolve any issues before the actual meeting. No one is happy — Board members or staff — when questions asked at the public meeting can’t be answered because no one is prepared.

Adequate Yearly Progress. It sounds like a noble goal, a means of ensuring that every school in the U.S. is meeting academic standards in order for each child to get a good education. In reality, AYP is a moving target, making it nearly impossible for even excellent public schools like Downers Grove North and South high schools to clear a hurdle that gets higher with every passing year. The D99 school board heard a lengthy presentation Sept.

Ray Chen’s squeal wasn’t a typical one of 4-year-old angst. “This place is awesome!” he roared as he barreled down the hallway of Frisco’s Early Childhood School . The $18 million building opened this year, an oversize red brick schoolhouse with knee-high windows and miniature toilets. The building is Frisco ISD’s first location created specifically for eligible preschoolers and fills an expanding need for low-income and special education services. But it also represents a growing investment in early childhood education .

Friday, August 21, 2009Like seeing-eye dogs for the blind, trained dogs are now being used to help autistic children deal with their disabilities. But some schools want to keep the animals out, and families are fighting back. Two autistic elementary school students recently won court orders in Illinois allowing their dogs to accompany them to school. Their lawsuits follow others in California and Pennsylvania over schools’ refusal to allow dogs that parents say calm their children, ease transitions and even keep the kids from running into traffic.

School mornings began early at 6am to allow enough time for me to feed myself breakfast, typically either oatmeal porridge or two pieces of peanut butter toast, each folded in half to allow for easy grasping; and, for Mom to help me to get dressed, including those long-legged braces that were cold on winter days and sticky hot on summer days. It wasn’t that I couldn’t dress myself; it simply took longer than we had on school mornings. Mom’s help on weekdays was one of those instances when practicality overrode independence.
