More me on me - “Stay or Go?” revisited - northernplainsanglicans.blogspot.com
08/22/2009
OK, so I’ve posted a “stay in The Episcopal Church ( TEC )” piece and a “Get out of TEC now” piece tonight. What’s my deal? I gave very serious thought to leaving a couple of years ago. In a number of ways, God has restrained that impulse. 1) God’s used the Church of the Good Shepherd itself. Like many South Dakota congregations, it’s hung in there in some very lean times. The people are accustomed to facing difficulties by pulling together. I’ve come to understand congregations here a bit more over these few years.
Dad’s Eulogy - merlehamburger.net

As I said previously, I was asked to give the family euology at my father’s funeral service.  Several people asked me to post what I said, so here it is.  While I’m the final author, these comments reflects the thoughts, feelings, and love of the family and friends who have been here mourning my Dad’s passing this past week: I’ve been asked to give you the family’s perspective on Ed Hamburger: husband, dad, step-dad, uncle, brother, grandfather, teacher, friend!  When I asked family members to describe my Dad, several words kept coming up: Loving!

Final post in a series on Internet resources for Educators working with Special Needs students. This week’s post is a bit of a mixed bag. I’ll wrap up this 5 part series with some information on resources for students with physical handicaps (other than visual impairments , and hearing impairments , covered the last two weeks) . I also will cite a few more general resources for working with special needs students, as the focus on specific categories of needs in these recent posts could not (by its very definition) include all varieties of disabilities.

School Bus Cuts Face Safety Concerns - remmersreport.blogspot.com

I live across the street from Chaparral High School in Temecula , Calif., and every school morning and afternoon dozens of yellow school buses roll in and out of the campus’s sprawling parking lot. Temecula is a semi-rural area 60 miles southeast of Los Angeles and its boundaries extend miles in all directions. As most school districts, Temecula offers bus transportation to students living outside a determined radius, usually 1.5 miles, and by law for all handicapped and special education pupils.

Those of us who have ever had the luxury of working as part of a team–particularly that rare, unicorn-like beast that is the school library team–know how easy it is to take good co-workers for granted. Not sure how to approach a reference question? Consult the team. Need someone to grab the other end of that table so you can rearrange furniture for a DDR tournament? Ask a co-worker. Forgot to pack a lunch and need to pop out for a bite? You can probably get desk coverage if you ask real nice.

There are some people who, though briefly we have met them, gave a considerable impact to our lives. We may have met them briefly, worked with them or even met them just once but they left a somewhat lasting impression. Yes, these people are few and far between. In my career as a teacher, I have encountered students who made these impressions with me and very few of them, I worked with very briefly. This thought came to me last night when we were on our way to our favorite fast food place.

The report “Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies” from the US Department of Education suggests that online learning is more effective than face to face classroom learning, that blended learning is no more effective than purely online learning and that video and online quizzes do not improve online learning. It should be noted that the US study has limitations: it is a “meta” analysis, that is analysis of previous results, not new data collection.

The First Week of School - oldcoyote.wordpress.com

I have survived my first week of teaching the mathematics.  It’s been a roller coaster already with almost every day swinging from one extreme to another.  Here’s how the week went: Monday: (Labor Day) Attended a barbecue where a fellow teacher (not first year) described the first year like being tossed into a shark tank.  I naively thought I was on top of my game because I had two weeks of teacher conferences under my belt with not too much stress added.

Click on the “click here” button to see new possibilities. My thoughts for this in my classroom would be to use this when kids need a break from the usual routine, when things are getting stale, on early out days and class periods are short, and so on. Once you see how it works, you could also make your own options with your own curriculum and choices for how/what type activities and let kids draw from a hat.

Children with autism have difficulty adjusting to changes. They mostly rely on routines and familiar places, objects and activities to occupy their time, day in and day out. Any change in schedule would probably bring an onslaught of varied reactions from them. Family-friendly places are beginning to make adjustments to accommodate these families to their places. For example, these families can now have Florida vacations because Walt Disney World have made arrangements for guests who have a child with autism welcome.

Once again, it’s Monday, and it’s time for that Mailbox Monday thing that I do. As always, thanks to Marcia at The Printed Page for hosting. This week, I got boring books in the mail. Not ARCs, not “fun” books. I got textbooks. I’m 9 semester hours into my MAT (Masters of Arts in Teaching) degree through Liberty University’s Distance Learning Program, and after taking some time off, I’m back into it. I’m only taking two classes this semester, just enough to qualify for my student loan, but that will be plenty.

I don’t know if Calvin is relieved for a bit of piece and quiet, or wondering where his partner in crime is all day long. Mommy is doing okay… I guess. And, Charlie? Well, the kid has an amazing ability to “just roll with it” when it comes to things like these.
